ABSTRACT

As we approach the aftermath of a global pandemic caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Corona Virus (SARS-CoV-2), the importance of quickly developing rapid screening tests has become very clear from the point of view of containment and also saving lives. Here, we present an explorative study to develop a telepathology-based screening tool using peripheral blood smears (PBS) to identify Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19)-positive cases from a group of 138 patients with flu-like symptoms, consisting of 82 positive and 56 negative samples. Stained blood smear slides were imaged using an automated slide scanner (AI 100) and the images uploaded to the cloud were analyzed by a pathologist to generate semi-quantitative leukocyte morphology-related data. These telepathology data were compared with the data generated from manual microscopy of the same set of smear slides and also the same pathologist. Besides good correlation between the data from telepathology and manual microscopy, we were able to achieve a sensitivity and specificity of 0.83 and 0.71, respectively, for identifying positive and negative COVID-19 cases using a six-parameter combination associated with leukocyte morphology. The morphological features included plasmacytoid cells, neutrophil dysplastic promyelocyte, neutrophil blast-like cells, apoptotic cells, smudged neutrophil, and neutrophil-to-immature granulocyte ratio. Although Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and antibody tests have a superior performance, the PBS-based telepathology tool presented here has the potential to be an interim screening tool in resource-limited settings in underdeveloped and developing countries.

ABSTRACT

Background :Cytological analyses of body effusions plays an important role in the diagnosis of various lesions. Material & Methods : A retrospective study for one year duration from Jan 2016 to Dec 2016 was undertaken in the Department of Pathology. It includes all samples of pleural, ascitic & pericardial fluid received in cytology section. Results : Cytological analysis was done on all 284 cases of effusion fluids. Pleural fluid was the most common type of fluid received followed by ascitic & pericardial fluids. Maximum number of cases were transudates in nature. 257 cases were non neoplastic & 27 were neoplastic. Adenocarcinoma was the most common morphological pattern. Conclusion : Cytological study of body fluids is an inexpensive & simple procedure, useful in studying the etiology, course of disease and also to monitor the response to the therapy

Maxillofacial prosthesis is an art and science which not only replaces the lost structure but also sometimes restores the function.obturator is a prosthesis which closes the palate and pharyngeal defects and improving the speech and other function. This article presents a case report of a completely edentulous patient with palatal insufficiency rehabilitated prosthodontically with a hollow bulb obturator and a procedure for fabrication of closed hollow bulb obturator prosthesis.

ABSTRACT

This paper highlights the fact that many anterior teeth requiring restoration are severely weakened, having wide flared canal spaces and thin dentinal walls, and are at a high risk of getting fractured. An 20 year old female patient reported with the complaint of unesthetic smile due to fracture and discolored tooth. She gave a history of trauma around 4-5 years back. This case was managed by the customization of fiber reinforced posts which has made a great impact on esthetics and redistribution of stresses along the radicular space and dentin tissue conservation. Thus modern techniques reflect a change from what was once considered prosthodontic procedure to one which marries endodontic principles with sound understanding of mechanical objectives.

ABSTRACT

The realization of esthetic objectives and functional demands in the reconstruction of severely compromised dentition represents considerable clinical problems. This clinical report represents the prosthetic management of a severe dentofacial deformity with compromised periodontal status. Treatment objectives were based on Aesthetics enhancement, sociopsychological support of the patient, restoration of form function, phonetics and comfort. Following which extraction of upper incisors and alveoloplasty done. An immediate removable partial denture was fabricated, considering aesthetics, phonetics and comfort of the patient followed by replacement of incisors by metal- ceramic fixed partial denture done. Clinical relevance: prosthetic management of severlymalaligned natural maxillary anterior teeth by fixed partial denture, considering aesthetics and phonetics of the patient. Treatment objectives: Aesthetics enhancement, sociopsychological support of the patient, restoration of form function, phonetics and comfort.

ABSTRACT

The dental profession is more aware of the problems associated with a complete denture than any other prosthesis. Sorrowful situation arises due to continuous resorption of the basal bone and lack of proprioception due to loss of teeth. The answer to this nagging problem lies in the scope of “Preventive Prosthodontics”. And there is no better example of such an effort other than overdentures. This paper presents a case report of “Access post overdenture”. The advantage of this overdenture post system lies in its patented, thick walled hollow tube design, stabilizing flanges, and undercuts of the shank which offers strength, retention due to nylon caps, and stability for the prosthesis.
